Social realism soaked through with a heady dose of fantasy, idiosyncratic poetics, keyboard flurries and vocal vicissitudes; Ravioli Me Away worship at the altar of a lysergically enhanced Nefertiti, as Mike Leigh pulls up a pew. If all job interviews were played out like the micro-musical of opener 'Good Team Player', then the trials of employment would not be so bad. "Are you able to work under pressure?" is bolstered by a tangy bass line. "I'm a big fish in a little little pond," is primed with pre-school xylophone. 'Cat Call' pours all the depressing facts of Everyday Sexism into a shrill cry of empowerment and 'Imagination' is an anti-anthem for the disillusioned, deluded and dicked off. Done up with organ flourishes like a special beehive at a bingo game, it's also the only time you'll happily endure David Cameron's voice for longer than ten seconds. "Do you remember Faithless at Creamfields in 98? You tore off my tights with your teeth in your Volvo Estate," just one of the questions posed in 'Romantic Amnesia'; a memory-jogger for anyone who has (fortuitously) forgotten. That's not forgetting 'What's It About' - a song proudly channeling Devo - as well the highly caffeinated keyboard leaps of 'Hit By Love' and kitsch instrumental meander 'Euro Breakdown'. So if the only scientific truth is that all life will some day end, 'The Inevitable Album' is an essential part of the voyage. Ravioli Me Away released a split LP on Upset The Rhythm in January and there's a new cassette of live recorded material on the way. Produced by Ben Waller of The Country Teasers/The Rebel, which is due in the summer on Neen Records. ( Rough Trade )
