Punk heroes The Spits have made people wait an inordinate amount of time to unleash new material on the world. It’s been nine long years, but finally they return with their sixth album, and if anything, it was definitely worth the wait. For this one, the band went back to their roots in Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids, Michigan to record this album. In fact, they went back to the basements, to record this one, using a thriftstore guitar and a budget drum kit. It was also recorded directly to four track cassette. All this gives the album a nice, grotty charm, that recording in a regular studio can’t capture. It suits them to a t. They also made sure to take their time with this one, making sure everything was done right. Or at least, their version of “right”. So, was it worth the wait? Yes. Yes. And Yes. VI is everything you love about the The Spits in one 10-song, 17-minute blast of fuzzed out guitar, killer pop hooks and a general sense of chaos that is missing from most bands. They manage to create another punk rock classic to go along with the previous five classic albums in their catalog. So, almost 30 year on, they haven’t lost a step or their sense of fun. They still reign as one of the best punk bands going today. So, I guess it goes without saying that you will pick up this album. If not, you’ll be missing out, and you don’t to do that, now, do you? It’s a no brainer. Get this album.
