But that's probably not the point.
From duo to quartet, from demo to EP via cassette, there's been a lot of activity over the last five years and, after all, it was time to get serious, to move on to a 12-inch, to move on to a debut album.
Whereas early work might have had a few post-punk hints here and there, here it's hardcore and it's dark at heart, angry around the edges and politically biting throughout. Influences from the best of contemporary English hardcore punk (Bad Breeding, Mother Nature) mix with 80s American classics (from DC to California) and fist-pumping d-beat... but all in French and perhaps in ‘French’ style, some might say...
These four have been playing and digesting all this for a long time, and it has to come out, it has to spurt out, it has to burst hard, and it does.
It hits hard, it crushes. Like fascism getting bigger and stronger, like police violence down our streets, like the massacre and death of the Gazans, but also like the grip of techno-capitalism on our lives and the pathetic spectacle of our own desires.
Guimauve is all that here, it's the struggle, the despair of it all, it's the now that stinks and cries, it's the noise that scratches and screams, it's these 12 tracks that hit and pass...
