Fanny Kaplan - s/t 12"

Russian punx Fanny Kaplan provide lo-fi six cuts here on board with the abstractions of noise and the simplicities of no wave, creating a lazerbeaming free post-punk that sorta sounds like total shambles while also totally having its shit together. Am I making any sense? Are you enjoying all these conflicting descriptions? I guess we could just call it a fun listen and leave it there. But we won’t. Much like one of those great Ponytail records, this record is special because it meditates on the moment before total collapse -- tunes like “Locked Up” have synth arguing with a shaken-not-stirred drumbeat, off-course bass and yelped vocals, each working so hard on its own corner of proceedings that it eventually, weirdly and semi-disastrously adds up to a sum of the parts. “False Shooter” proves they can counter the shambles with riffs and hooks proper, a little bleating synth line, sounding slightly distorted, carrying the rest of the fallen-bicycle sounds towards the finish line. The off-kilter video game sounds of “The Scheme Expired a Second Ago” balance out a psychedelic free-for-all that sounds as both echoing and remote and gnarled to the core. They’re making a lot of sounds, disagreeing on the speed they should be played at and letting it all go to shit. Obviously we like them.
