With a strong, violet stroke, the artist has placed the figure on the paper, one might almost say engraved it. The dark hair is curled up, but not completely. On the back half of the face, a strand still peeps out, just as if the sitter had been surprised in the middle of her evening toilet. With her face buried in her hands, as if she wanted to hide her features, disfigured by the tribulation, out of shame, the woman seems to be seized by acute pain. As to the origin of her malaise we can only speculate. Whether humiliation, lovesickness, impotence, grief, shame or even depression, we do not know.The soft pink checked robe is obviously a night skirt, and so we can conclude that it is a touchingly lonely scene in a bed chamber. Hair and clothing, however, provide limited information about time and space. One could assume that this is a typical 1960s German housewife. She has just made herself beautiful, prepared her hair for the next day, smeared her skin thickly with fragrant camomile cream, when she is shaken by a feeling of unexplained origin. A domesticated scene that is sure to evoke an oppressive closeness in some people.On the left edge of the picture, the scene is framed by the sentence: "I could be you - but you never me", flanked by an eye that looks at the viewer as if it wants to direct the statement towards us. The sentence, which begins in an intonation that promises an empathetic colouring, ends with a haughty turn of phrase, indeed, with downright presumptuous arrogance. What it refers to we cannot know. Is the person depicted meant? Who does she stand for? Are we meant ourselves in the end? We don't know what Mother's heart is like. But we can understand her pain. creditsreleased September 30, 2022
