Those Once Loyal is the eighth and unfortunately final studio album by old school death metal gods Bolt Thrower. Those Once Loyal is a perfectly constructed album, it's somewhat simple but it does its job extremely well with amazing drumming, loud bass, and heavy riffs. The most popular song on the album and possibly in all of Bolt Thrower's discography is The Killchain. This song is killer, it's got heavy chugging with single notes being played alongside the chugs making an awesome and heavy sound that makes you want to destroy your enemies in the heat of battle. Another thing that is included on The Killchain which I think is an awesome touch, is an iconic intro riff that they add to many of their songs, it's something they've been doing for a while now. It's just fast tempoed 0-0-0s with an occasional power chord on the first fret of A. It's supposed to imitate machine gun fire, another aspect that reinforces the already strong tone and theme of Bolt Thrower's overall theme, especially on this album.
Although I love this entire album beginning to end, my personal favorite song off this album would be the song Those Once Loyal. This song has a good amount of heavy riffage, harmonies, and of course growling vocals. The theme of this song is portrayed really well just as is the rest of the album, the songs main theme is death, loss, and the toll that war takes. this is shown when reading some of the lyrics: "To those once loyal, now wreathed in crimson, a solemn reminder of silent sacrifice. To those once loyal, forever wrapped in glory, in white crossed acres, lines of sorrow laid". Awesome stuff that really paints a good picture of the brutality and pain that is war and death. Two songs that really immerse you into the war feel would be the songs At First Light and Salvo, both of these songs throw you right into the trenches of the First World War with the heaviness of the other songs and lyrics that talk about being in a warzone, fighting off enemies in trenches and diving from artillery fire. The sheer perfection that Bolt Thrower created is something nobody can replicate, they successfully made a perfect death metal album beginning to end in my opinion, it's hard to find albums with such good and consistent riffs, drums, and vocals. The lyrics on this entire album are a masterpiece, the band did a perfect job at describing war and its horrors.
Bolt Thrower would continue to tour and play music for about ten or eleven so years after the release of Those Once Loyal in 2005, it was until the untimely and unfortunate death of their drummer, Matt "Kiddie" Kearns, that was ultimately the thing that ended the band. Even with the tragic ending of the band, they did end in my opinion with the best final album released by any metal band. If you haven't I implore you to dive deeper into not only this album but all of Bolt Thrower's discography, although this album is probably the best, all of their previous albums are great as well. Bolt Thrower is a really good old school death metal entry band so if you are trying to get into old School death metal in general, Bolt Thrower would be one of my top recommendations.
Rest in Peace Kiddie.
